Sisso & Maiko‘s productions epitomize Singeli’s hyperlocal “scenius”, distilling the vitality and struggle of life of the fringes of the Swahili-speaking world’s most populous city, into a unique music which seems to reflect the idea of keeping a cool head in frenetic situations. Between their ratchet rhythms and pitched-up melodies there’s a sublime, unresolved tension at play, where the music feels to accelerate so fast that dancers are gliding, sustaining a breathlessly “up” effect that uncannily recalls mid ’90s UK happy hardcore as much as Chicago footwork, Caribbean Soca, and Shangaan disco, yet with a psychotomimetic appeal all of its own.

Born in the sprawling working class neighborhoods of Tandale and Manzese, Singeli’s signature sound consists of fast paced frantic loops interlocking with each other, with influences from Zanzibar’s Tarab music all the way to South African afro-house coupled with mc’s who often spit satirical lyrics about the challenges facing Tanzania’s youth, from police corruption to the complications of dating girls when you are broke. If there is one studio that stands out amongst the hundreds that dot Dar es Salaam’s musical landscape it is SISSO RECORDS. Centered around producers; Bwax, Sisso, Bampa Pana and Jay Mitta and MC’s Dogo Niga, Kadilida, Anti Vairas and Makavelli, they were early pioneers of the Singeli sound.

Born and raised in Cairo, Nadah El Shazly began her musical journey as a member of Sick Gdrch, a Misfits cover band, before venturing into electronic production and composition. Her debut album, 2017’s ‘Ahwar’, earned global praise for its merging of heritage and innovation, and established Nadah as a leading figure in the contemporary music landscape. She appeared on the cover of The Wire in 2018 in an issue announcing “Cairo’s New Wave.”

El Shazly’s live performances are equally immersive, combining her enthralling voice with intricate sound manipulation and dynamic collaborations with other musicians. She has worked with a host of innovators including Sam Shalabi, Elvin Brandhi, Maurice Louca, and many more. She’s graced stages at prestigious venues and festivals worldwide, including Irtijal, Le Guess Who?, Rewire, Best Kept Secret, FIMAV, Roskilde, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Nusasonic, and Marfa Myths. Beyond her solo work, Nadah is an active contributor to Cairo’s independent music scene, supporting emerging artists and engaging in cross-disciplinary projects.

Hailing from Milan, Italy, F. Birsa Alessandri AKA Sense Fracture is both a disruptive and constructive force. A DJ, music producer, labelhead and promoter, they started doing music with the intent to question established norms, provoke and overturn. Their work traverses the most radical fringes of rave culture and experimental electronics, injecting them with bits of digitised heavy metal, harsh sound design, spaced-out pop and weird Mediterranea. A mixture that gave their DJ sets a reputation for intensity and unpredictability. As co-founder of Haunter Records, part of the Paimonia crew and curator of seminal rave series Dance Affliction, they spent more than 15 feeding weird things to the Milan underground, a practice forged through years of militancy in the Saturnalia collective at infamous squat/venue MACAO. Their current sonic research is focused channeling traditional dances of the southern Italian continuum into hard-edged contemporary dance music, aiming at a deviation of standardized rave trajectories.
