Bill Cole is an American jazz musician, composer, educator and author. An admired innovator, Cole successfully combines the sounds of untempered instruments with an American art form – jazz. Cole specializes in non-Western wind instruments, especially double reed horns: including Chinese sonas, Korean hojok and piri; Indian nagaswarm and shenai and Tibetan trumpet; as well as the Australian didgeridoo and Ghanaian flute. For 31 years Cole led the Untempered Ensemble, a group he founded in 1992. He has performed with Sam Rivers, Billy Bang, Jayne Cortez, Julius Hemphill, Ornette Coleman, James Blood Ulmer, William Parker, Fred Ho, Gerald Veasley and others; at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Town Hall, Symphony Space and venues around the U.S. and in Europe; and has recorded for Boxholder Records.
Althea SullyCole is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and ethnomusicologist from New York City. She is currently based in Montréal, QC, where she is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University. Althea studied her primary instrument, the kora, a 21-stringed harp from the Mandé region of West Africa, under korists Yacouba Sissoko and Edou Manga. She spent 3 years studying the instrument in Dakar, Senegal. In addition to her solo work, she has worked with Billy Harper, Billy Bang, Fred Ho, Daara J Family, Sahad Sarr, Royal Messenger, LaFrae Sci, Lisette Santiago, Joseph Daley, Craig Harris and father Bill Cole, among many others.
Samba Lobi Traoré is a guitarist, composer, arranger and performer. His musical influences come first and foremost from Mali, the country where he was born and raised. Following in the footsteps of his father, guitariste and singer Lobi Traoré, Samba naturally took up the guitar at an early age. Samba’s music is squarely centered on the Blues, whether from West Africa or the African diaspora. It also pays homage to blues-based genres such as rock, jazz, hip hop , funk and afrobeat. Samba’s music is a blend of traditional music from Segou (Mali) and modern music giving music a unique color and diverse sound (Sahel and urban music). On stage, he plays alone or accompanied by his band.
A self-taught drummer/band leader, Jahsun has over 30 years of professional experience. He is one of the most requested drummers in Montreal. Specializing in reggae, jazz-hop, funk, R&B & soul, hip-hop music, he has toured across Canada, India, China, the Caribbean & the United States. Jahsun has solid experience performing in large, international festivals and concert venues and studio recording in a variety of genres, focused on both improvisational and rehearsed content. Since 2003, he has been founder and artistic director of the Kalmunity Vibe Collective, a premiere platform for artistic expression, artist development & networking based on improvised music.
The MALQA trio offers hypnotic and resolutely electronic noise, revealing a striking voice, an emblematic call which gradually leads towards a total and deep trance. Between unbridled pop-rock, contemporary music and timeless breath, MALQA ventures into the improvised lands of a new world. MALQA’s music is quite unclassifiable as it takes hybrid paths. The trio offers sets of around 1 hour where improvisation, noise and electronic rhythms mingle and volumes shape landscapes made of areas sometimes turbulent and dynamic, sometimes soothing and deep.
