Thanks to the Guelph Jazz Festival for organizing أحمد [Ahmed]’s Canadian tour.

أحمد [Ahmed] (UK/France/Sweden) is Pat Thomas (piano), Antonin Gerbal (drums), Joel Grip (double bass), and Seymour Wright (alto saxophone). The group reworks the music of the late musician Ahmed Abdul-Malik to create swinging, relentlessly propulsive and ecstatic feeling music. Abdul-Malik was a New York bassist, oudist, composer, educator and philosopher who fused aspects of American, Arabic and East African thought, ethics, meanings and beliefs. He was best known for his work with Thelonious Monk.

Sam Shalabi is an Egyptian-Canadian composer, improviser and guitarist living between Montreal and Cairo. Starting out during the late 70s punk era, his work has evolved into an experimental synthesis of modern Arabic Music that incorporates free improvisation, traditional Arabic music, noise, classical, text, and jazz. For this concert, he will perform solo oud interpretations of Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler and others.
