Beatings Are in the Body is a powerful and enigmatic new project from three of Canada’s leading figures in experimental music—Vancouver-based pianist, composer, and improviser Róisín Adams (of Hildegard’s Ghost), Montréal-based experimental vocalist and composer Erika Angell (of Thus Owls), and fellow Vancouverite Peggy Lee—a renowned cellist, composer and improviser.

As their name indicates, there’s a raw, volatile dimension to the music they create; it’s an investigation of how memories, pain, and a spectrum of emotions are stored in and continue to be carried by our physical bodies. Their “compositions seek to unlock some deeply felt neural memories and release them via sonic vibrations” (Annapoorna Shruthi for The Vancouver Arts Review) while “acting like a balm on our tired bodies and tortured souls” (Gérard de Oliviera, Á Décrouvrir Absolument).

Like artists (and audience), every space bears its own imprint, trajectory, and will—shaped by the interests it brings together, its acoustic particularities, and the totality of sounds it hosts, invokes, fosters, and accumulates. Each place is, in itself, a rich and profound sonic universe—an universe carved in air. Tallado en el aire begins from an engagement with the sonic universe in which it takes place, and with the relationship its performers establish with it, considering both certain sounds that occur in the room during the performance itself, and the sounds present in the “phonographies”.

For the creation of the electroacoustic track of Tallado en el aire, Áñez and Geneviève Liboiron dug into the sonic archives of the Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival, and includes excerpts of concerts from the 2009, 2017 and 2018 editions, all happening at Sala Rossa.

Tallado en el aire features Adrianne Munden-Dixon (violon), Daniel Áñez (piano) and Daniel Leguizamón (composition).

Adrianne Munden-Dixon is a violinist, improviser and composer known for her “shapeshifting technical facility” (I Care If You Listen). Her work often explores the interaction of timbre and texture with a combination of playfulness and “white-knuckle energy” (Bandcamp Daily). She performs internationally as a soloist and in ensemble as a member of No Hay Banda, Vines, and in duos with violist Carrie Frey, bassist Pablo Jimenez, and multi-instrumentalist Raphaël Foisy. Her compositions have been performed at the Darmstädter Ferienkurse, University of Georgia, and recorded by the JACK Quartet as a JACK Studio Artist. Originally from Savannah, Georgia, she now shares her time between Montréal and New York where she is active in the contemporary and experimental music scenes.

Daniel Áñez is a Colombian pianist specializing in Latin American contemporary repertoire. His work as a chamber musician and soloist has taken him to over 15 countries across the Americas and Europe, where he has participated in the world premieres of more than 50 works. In addition to his piano expertise, he is also a performer of the Ondes Martenot and synthesizer. Daniel is the co-founder of the concert series No Hay Banda and serves on the Editorial Board of Circuit magazine. He is the pianist for the Wapiti Ensemble and holds a doctorate in piano performance from the University of Montreal.

Daniel Leguizamón studied composition and philosophy at the Universidad de Los Andes in Bogotá. As a composer, performer, teacher, researcher, cultural manager, and editor, he is dedicated to contemporary and experimental practice in Colombia. He is a member of various experimental music ensembles, including the Bogotá Improvisers Orchestra, and is co-founder of the Círculo Colombiano de Música Contemporánea (CCMC).
